Florida-based KelTec has always been in the same general Cocoa area location since formed in 1991 by Swedish-born firearms maverick George Kellgren after he stepped away from Intratec and Grendel.
Still, they’ve done fairly good for themselves, making over 185,000 firearms of all types in 2020 alone in their current 125,000 sq. ft. facility.
However, the company last week announced they are setting up a satellite industrial space in Rock Springs, Wyoming which will allow them to increase production and work on some of their historic backlogs. While the Wyoming plant is small– just 33,000 sq. ft.– Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon’s office says KelTec eventually want to expand it until they have 250 workers there.
By comparison, their Florida plant employs about 300, so you can see how this could be a game changer.
Further, building a plant in Rocky Mountain country is an insurance policy against hurricanes. At least nine major hurricanes have hit Florida in the past two decades.
